The Organic pesticide Nuke Em® has been introduced to the indoor/outdoor gardening community by Flying Skull Plant Products. This multi-purpose Organic insecticide/fungicide is listed for Organic use by OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute). It kills the eggs, larvae, juvenile and adult insects. Nuke Em® targets all species of Mites, Leaf Aphids, Whitefly and other plant leaf and soil insect parasites. Its unique formula also allows for outstanding control of the vast varieties of powdery mildew and mold found in the garden. Nuke Em® is different than oil-based pesticides (oil-based pesticides have oil as their active ingredient). Nuke Em® will not slow the plant's growth as oil-based pesticides can. Also, Nuke Em® will not significantly lower the light coming into leaf cells and it will not significantly obstruct air from going into and out of the leaf’s stomata as oil-based pesticides can. Nuke Em® has killing power while allowing the plant to thrive while going through treatment. Nuke Em® is the correct choice.
Is Nuke Em® registered in Washington State for I-502?
- Yes
Is Nuke Em® registered and on the Official List in Florida State for commercial grows?
- Yes
Nuke Em® won’t lower the value of your harvest like other insecticides/fungicides!
You’ve worked hard for your customers, don’t lose them because your harvest didn’t taste or smell the same. Think about it; do you have customers that purchased from you but then they suddenly stopped? Was it after a crop you treated with insecticides or fungicides? Did those insecticides/fungicides have Pyrethrums, concentrated plant oils, petroleum oils or detergents in them? Don’t feel alone. We have gotten thousands of new customers because they lost profit from crops after they applied supposedly natural pesticides. Don’t worry; Nuke Em® is here to keep your plant value high and your customers loyal!
Be wary of insecticides made with concentrated oils as their active ingredient because they need detergents to make them water soluble. Once dried, these ingredients will plug and cover the plant’s leaf stomata and cover the light cells that produce sugars in the photosynthesis process. This slows plant growth, reducing water uptake, and makes it harder for the plant to recover from insect attack.
This is why your plants had slow or stunted growth after you sprayed with oil and detergent-based products. How do you know if you’re using oil and detergent-based pesticides? Oil and detergent-based pesticides look like milk or chalky water when mixed with water. Their oils are mixed with detergent and water but the ready-to-use spray smells like the oils it’s made with or the smell of the detergent. These concentrated plant oils include Neem, Rosemary, Pine, Peanut, Rose and others too many to mention.
Remember: All oils, no matter what quality they are, need to have detergent added to become soluble in water. If you spray oil-based pesticides on a window and let it dry, you can write your name in the dried residue with your fingernail.
Should I add a wetting agent to Nuke Em®?
Look for our wetting agent, Spread Coat. Spread Coat is OMRI listed and made to work with Nuke Em®. It is now available.
Yes, we are finding that using a surfactant or wetting agent helps Nuke Em® to cover the leaf and in doing so contacts the insects, larvae, eggs etc. Plants leaves, some more than others, have a waxy cuticle which will tend to shed water and or the Nuke Em®. By adding the wetting agent, the leaf will get full coverage. The analogy for cars would be a freshly waxed car sheds water in beads. Add a wetting agent to the water and you have no more beads but a sheeting action over the fender.
Adding a wetting agent will allow you to use less Nuke Em® as more spray will stay on the leaf; less will be on the floor or ground.
Pro Growers Note: When ordering Nuke Em®, order Z7 at the same time. Over 80% of the time, leaf insect and powdery mildew attack indicates root zone problems! Start using Z7 now! Z7 is amazing and very inexpensive to use. It has saved countless growers from major malfunctions and made huge differences in yield and crop consistency. Z7cleans bio-film from growing medium, pipes, tubes and entire grow systems. Z7 will release mineral ions from carbon bonds so everything in the root zone remains cleansed by greatly reducing mineral build up from plastic.
I have a big infestation of broad mites, what are my options?
Because Nuke Em® is a contact killer it is very important that every mite and egg come into contact with Nuke Em®. Even in the best conditions with careful applications, it is very hard to get complete coverage on the first spray. Use Flying Skull’s wetting agent, Spread Coat, to help Nuke Em® stick to the leaf and get good coverage.
Growers are reporting to us that they have had good luck with these MODIFIED applications. Remember to wash all other insecticides and fungicides off leaves before applying Nuke Em®. Modified applications are always best done by spraying a few plants and observing before spraying them all. 95% of growers that have insect problems have soil/growing mediums that are saturated with fertilizer causing the plant to become weak. The insects now have a home on a plant that can’t put up decent self-defense. It is extremely important to wash this excess fertilizer from the growing media before the application of any brand of insecticide. If the plant can’t get water from the roots, it will take water in through the leaves. If the water sprayed on the leaves has an insecticide in it, the insecticide will be brought into the plant for use in photosynthesis and vascular relocation. You never want to feed a plant insecticide. So, make sure the plant is fully hydrated before any application of insecticide or fungicide no matter the brand or type of insecticide.
Growing media should be flushed in such a fashion that the water coming from the pot is no more than 50 PPM/TDS above the water supply’s PPM/TDS going into the pot. Only a PPM/TDS/EC meter can tell you this.
Think of Nuke Em® as brakes on your car. While driving, you don’t use your brakes all the time but your brakes are a very important part of your trip. Nuke Em® should be used as a maintenance spray every week. No matter how careful you are insects and powdery mildew will enter the growing area. Large scale growers use Nuke Em® as a maintenance tool that keeps them from having problems that reduce harvest quantity or quality. Nuke Em® is a tool. It is part of the cost of doing business. It is better to bear the extra cost of maintenance than not have a good supply of quality produce when customers ask for it. Remember, customers will find produce elsewhere if you can’t supply them what they want when they want it.
Outdoor growers have reported successful maintenance programs to control Powdery Mildew by using this rate of spray weekly: 1- 2 ounces of Nuke Em® to every gallon of water with the Spread Coat wetting agent added at 5 to 10 mls (1-2 tsp) per gallon of water. See more in the FAQ section of this website. This rate will make 64 gallons of ready to use spray for every gallon of Nuke Em® concentrate.
Other insecticides, fungicides and plant washes use brain and body nerve poisons, detergents, chemical surfactants, petroleum or plant oil in their formulas that leave smelly, bad tasting and sticky residue on produce. Ultimately these ingredients will reduce the sales, desired flavor and smell of the gardener’s produce.
Anyone using Flying Skull’s Nuke Em® will immediately see a reduction of plant parasites and Powdery Mildew. At the same time, they will notice that Nuke Em® is easy to use, safer to spray, doesn’t smell bad, and did not reduce the value of the produce!
Nuke Em® is a multi-purpose product. It replaces many expensive single target pesticides and fungicides. This makes it very affordable. It can be used to kill hiding insects and mold on walls, floors and other gardening surfaces.
Nuke Em®’s highly concentrated formula must be diluted before spraying onto plants or garden surfaces. Read and follow all label cautions and directions. Nuke Em® has been in the lab for over 10 years prior to its release.
8 fl. oz. concentrate makes up to 2 gallons of ready to use spray.
32 fl. oz. concentrate makes up to 8 gallons of ready to use spray.
1 Gallon concentrate makes up to 32 gallons of ready to use spray.
Nuke Em® is not registered with the US Federal Environmental Protection Agency. Its formula qualifies for exemption under FIFRA section 25 (b).
Mixing Rates:
- Normal Strength spray is 1 ounce Nuke Em® to 31 ounces of water.
- Enhanced Strength is 1.5 ounces of Nuke Em® to 30.5 ounces of water.
- Strong Strength is 2 ounces of Nuke Em® to 30 ounces of water.
General Leaf Application Directions:
- Use the normal strength mix first, if needed use the next stronger strength.
- For complete control, 3 applications may be needed; each application should be 3 days apart.
- For cuttings and clones, use the normal strength.
PRO GROWERS NOTE: For infestations, 3 applications may be done in one 24-hour period. Some plants may desire to have the diluted Nuke Em® pH adjusted to 7 before for spraying. We do not have enough data to confirm a label change at this time. Should you wish to try adjusting the diluted Nuke Em® to pH 7, try it on one plant before applying to the whole crop.
Leaf insect and powdery mildew control:
- Water growing media, pots and containers to leach fertilizer from the root zone and add turgor to the plant cell structure. No watering is required for field grown plants.
- Shake the bottle well before diluting into a spray or dip. 30 gallon drums should be mixed before pumping into smaller containers
- If growing indoors, turn the main lighting OFF before spraying plants. Apply in low light then turn OFF all lighting until Nuke Em® dries. (Nuke Em® is a pesticide, not a leaf feed)
- If growing outdoors, spray on leaves on stems just before sundown or at the coolest part of the day under heavy cloud cover.
Root Aphid Control for Soil Growers:
- Mix up enough Nuke Em® to saturate the growing medium.
- Use the normal strength of Nuke Em® which is 1 ounce Nuke Em® to 31 ounces of water. Adjust the pH of the Nuke Em® dilute to the target pH desired in your soil. Use stronger strength if test plant still shows signs of root aphids.
- Turn lights OFF and use low supplemental lighting to see. This is best done at the beginning of the light OFF cycle.
- Slowly pour Nuke Em® into the soil. There is a space or pocket just under the main stem that harbors many Root Aphids and is most likely the main habitat for the colony. Normally in an outdoor environment, this pocket is protected from rain or runoff. This will be a hard area to treat unless you take the time to slowly and carefully pour around the stem where it meets the soil. Work out from there making sure the soil is totally drenched.
- Nuke Em® needs to be in contact with the Root Aphids for 1 hour. Longer contact time is advisable if your plant variety responds well to extended duration. Before the lights turn ON, rinse the growing media well.
Pro Growers Note: Tests are currently being done to determine if Nuke Em® needs to be washed from the soil at all, or what time is the very best contact time for many plants. When we get this data, will let you know. Major university studies will eventually tell us the whole story. Should you decide to try the test of not washing Nuke Em® out of your soil on your own, only try it on one plant before you treat the whole. Let Flying Skull know what you found to be true.
Root Aphid Control for Hydroponic Growers:
- Ebb and Flow, NFT, Aero Tube
- Mix up enough Nuke Em® to saturate all of the growing medium and roots.
- Use the strong strength of Nuke Em® which is 2 ounces Nuke Em® to 30 ounces of water if your growing medium is soaking wet. If the growing medium is dry or moist use the normal strength. Adjust the pH of the Nuke Em® dilute to the target pH of your nutrient solution.
- Turn lights OFF and use low supplemental lighting to see. This is best done when at the beginning of the light OFF cycle.
- Slowly pour Nuke Em® into the hydroponic growing media. There is a space or pocket just under the main stem that harbors many Root Aphids and is most likely the main habitat for the colony. Normally in an outdoor environment, this pocket is protected from rain or runoff. This will be a hard area to treat unless you take the time to slowly and carefully pour around the stem where it meets the growing media. Work out from there making sure the growing media is totally drenched.
- Nuke Em® needs to be in contact with the Root Aphids for at least 1 hour. Longer contact times may be desirable if the plant variety can handle it. Always test one plant before testing the entire group. Before the lights turn ON, rinse Nuke Em® from the growing media, roots and hydro system before refilling the tank and turning Lights ON.
- Deep water culture systems may need a slightly different procedure for treatment.
- Drain the system and let the plants drip free of nutrient.
- Take a clean empty bucket and fill it with diluted Nuke Em® at standard strength and pH adjusted to your nutrient pH.
- Dip the plant and growing media into it. Submerge long enough for all growing media and roots to be saturated.
- Replace plant back into the hydro system for your hour wait time. Treatment should be done in Lights OFF cycle.
- Rinse the growing, roots media and hydro system well with water before adding nutrient and turning ON lighting.
After the one hour minimum of contact in the root zone, the residual from the main Nuke Em® application (after being rinsed from the root zone) may be run through the hydroponic system to clear any threat posed to the plants from insects inside the pipes and tubes. Taking the plants out of the system while it is being flushed is advisable should larvae or adult Root Aphid be in the tubes, buckets or tanks. The entire system needs to be flushed before turning ON the main lighting. This procedure will clear dead adult, juvenile and larvae from the hydroponic system.
Powdery Mildew:
Some Powdery Mildew will take three applications of the Nuke Em® to fully kill it. We suggest treating all Powdery Mildew the same by making sure that three applications are made.
Maintenance programs for Powdery Mildew: Weekly applications of outdoor plants using a dilution rate of 2 ounces Nuke Em® concentrate to every gallon of water has been found to be successful in controlling most molds like Powdery Mildew. Nuke Em® should be applied immediately after rains or while in periods of water droplets formed on leaves after fog or dew.
Hydroponic System Recommendation: Using Flying Skull s Z7 after the Nuke Em® treatment is advised. Add the Flying Skull Z7 Hydro System Cleanser to every tank change and every 4-5 days if nutrients are being recirculated in flood and drain, NFT or Deep Water Culture.
MODIFIED Application for Broad Mites:
Nuke Em® has been found effective in treating Broad mites but now having said that, it is important to realize that these little guys are really tough to kill because you have to completely cover them with spray. You will need three applications of Nuke Em® if you are in infestation stage. they can be on the same day if you let each application dry before you apply the next spray.
DAY ONE: Apply one application at strong strength (lights OFF), wait until it dries and then spray another application at strong strength, wait for it to dry and then spray another application at strong strength. (Three applications on the same day allowing the plants to completely dry between applications).
DAY THREE: Spray one strong strength application of Nuke Em®.
DAY SIX: Spray one strong strength application of Nuke Em®. Let the Nuke Em® dry and apply a mist of Z7on the plants and let it dry.
